#MotivationMonday: The Guide to a More Productive A.M. Routine

A More Productive A.M. Routine

What’s the first thought in your mind when you wake up in the morning? Is it a deliberate thought? Or is it “OH SH** I’M LATE!”?
Whether you’re conscious of it or not, there are always thoughts running through your head… while you’re in the shower, brushing your teeth, and eating breakfast.

A More Productive A.M. Routine

The habits that we form in the morning set the tone for the rest of our day. If we wake up and we are running late, or forget to eat breakfast, or can’t find our favorite shirt, or are just feeling tired and irritable, most likely our day is going to be filled with stress and anxiety.

Everyone has their own morning routine. Mine was:
(1) Alarm goes off.
(2) Snooze alarm 7 more times.
(3) Finally roll out of bed, annoyed that I even had to get up.
(4) Mindlessly make breakfast/brew coffee.
(5) Shower/make-up/hair/brush teeth.
(6) Shuffle through the fridge looking for food to pack for lunch.
(7) Take 10 years to figure out what outfit to wear.
(8) Finally leave the house, late.
Every day. Same routine.

The first minutes of your day impact the rest.

Here are some ways to start your day on a positive note and have a more productive morning:

1. Don’t snooze

When you go to bed at night, don’t leave it as an option to snooze your alarm, and put your phone (or alarm) far away from your bed, or on the floor. You’ll be annoyed in the morning when you have to get out of bed to turn it off, BUT you’re less likely to go back to sleep once you’re already up.

2. Be thankful

The first thing you should think about in the morning is all of the things that you’re thankful for. This will start the day on a positive note.

3. Set an intention

During breakfast, or while you’re waiting for your coffee to brew, sit down with some scratch paper or a notebook for a few minutes and make a short list of the day’s intentions, or some goals that you want to accomplish for the day. Carry the list with you and cross out each thing once it’s completed. Sense of accomplishment brings a more positive attitude towards the day.

4. Exercise

You knew this one was coming… and yes, that does mean having to wake up earlier, but you didn’t snooze your alarm, you thought of a list of things you’re thankful for, and now you woke up early and got in a great morning sweat and now you’re more energized to tackle your day. GO YOU!

5. Watch something funny

Watch a funny or motivational YouTube video during breakfast that puts you in a good mood. It’ll fuel more positive thoughts once you get in the shower or head to work. I like to watch motivational YouTube videos from Tony Robbins.
